Clean Water Now!

Have you seen/heard of a program called Clean Water Now!? I have been surfing in IB for a good portion of my life, and pollution is a huge problem. Not just in South Bay, but all up and down the coast. WiLDCOAST has a program called Clean Water Now!. They educate the community, hold beach clean ups, rallies, and sponsor local events. Here is a brief description on the reason for Clean Water Now!;

"Tijuana River pollution is a multidimensional problem impacting public health, environment and economy of the San Diego-Tijuana border communities. The Tijuana River watershed is 1,739 square-miles, with 1/4 in the U.S. and 3/4 in Mexico. During rains, trash and wastewater in Tijuana enter the river and flow to San Diego and ultimately into the ocean. Depending on ocean currents, this pollution can impact beach water quality from Playas de Tijuana, Mexico, all the way up to Coronado, in the U.S."

It's never too late to make a difference. Take a look at the website and see if there is a way you can get involved. Everyone can be a part of the Solution! CLICK HERE

6th Annual Dempsey Holder contest

The 6th Annual Dempsey Holder contest, was held in Imperial Beach, just south of the pier. The Surf was AMAZING when we first showed up at about 6:45 in the morning. There was over 140 contestants in the competition. The City Counsel called it the biggest surf event ever in the South Bay area. They really set the bar for including the whole community into the event.

The contest overall went smooth, and was completely wrapped up (including awards) by about 2:30ish. There were 2 competition areas...A and B. Doing 2 heats at a time, helped keep everything on track. Hats off to the organizers, they did a great job! There was 40+ body boarders competing for 1st place. Morey Boogy was giving a year long sponsorship to the 1st place Body Boarding winner. Each division of the contest won a board shaped by TNT. The competitors put on a good show!

My first heat was at 9:15, I was able to get first place in the heat and advance to the Semi Finals. The Semi Finals for Long Boarding was at 11:30, and winning first again was able to advance to the Finals! WooHoo!!

I met some great people down in Imperial Beach. They had High Tide playing, and it was GREAT being able to listen to them. Along with the band, there were great festival-ish booths to look at . It gave everyone in the family something to do during the contest.

The Longboarding final was at 12:30...What a heat! The wind created a blow out, and everyone was fighting for any wave that came through. I was able to ride all my waves in, and get a few nose rides in the mean-time. Overall it was a fun day with some fun surf! Of course, it didnt hurt to walk away with a 2nd place trophy! I cant wait for next year, I will for sure do this contest again.

The sponsor of the event WildCoast/ Coastalsalvaje is an organization that works with California and Latin America to protect and preserve coastal eco-stystems and wildlife. They are doing a lot in IB and all over the coast to promote education and action within communities to take a bigger part in saving the coastal environment. GO GREEN!!! Check out their website... Sacred Craft Show Day 2

The Sacred Craft Show on Day 2 was just as packed as the first day!

It was also the Dick Brewer 'Shape-off' contest. The grand prize was $500!

Throughout the day, you could walk over to any
of the portable shaping booths
and see someone in action.

While the shape off was going on, I still found a lot to look at and observe and people to catch up with. Larry Gordon and his wife showed up and we talked for a bit. Its always good to catch up with Larry!

After meeting up with Larry, I went back to see how the guys were at the My Local Line Up booth...

They reminded me that my episode will be airing on October 19th at 7pm, then again all that week at 12am! Make sure you tune into channel 16.

Or check out the website for more info.

Everyone over at the Cooperfish booth seemed to be having a lot of fun when I walked over.

Hey Micah! get back in your own booth!

Cooperfish had a great selection of boards on display, along with the Hott Chicks they have on their 2010 Calender.

The Australian Surf Champion, Mark Richards came out for an autograph signing...

...And finally it was time for the boards to be judged for the Dick Brewer 'Shape off'.
Bird Huffman, Chris Christenson, Toby and Dick Brewer were a few of the judges.

There was a total of 5 boards being judged and each one needed to be measured and looked at carefully.

After much deliberation, they finally had a winner.

I almost didnt get this shot...Dick Brewer only had his hand on the winner for less then a second.

That was the last major happening of the Sacred Craft show. After that, everyone started tearing down the booths and calling it a weekend!

I cant wait for next year!

Sacred Craft Show Day 1

The Sacred Craft Show this year was AWESOME!

The crowd that showed up was unbelievable. It was packed from start to finish both days. I couldnt get more then 15 feet before I would run into someone I knew and start talking. It was so good to see everyone and catch up. It was also good to see so many people there supporting the Surfing Industry...

Between helping out at the Wood Custom Surfboard booth, the My Local Line Up TV booth and checking out all the cool things...it was a very busy day!

Bird from South Coast Surf Shops was in attendance. He was one of the judges for the Dick Brewer 'Shape-off'...more about that tomorrow.

Glen, Shawd, and Sarah from Rainbow Fin Comp were there showing off some awesome stained glass art. Not just fin art! the pictures dont do them justice.
I would highly recommend checking them out the next time your in need of a fin. Not to mention, they are great people with a great company...

Sticky Bumps had a great booth across from Rainbow Fin Company. I was lucky to meet John Dahl, the prez. They had a board out for the little groms to color with the tinted wax...it helped keep some of the little ones occupied.

The guys from Slide Magazine had a booth. Be on the look out for the Magazine when it hits stores in November. They will be covering Long boarding, Mid-length,retro and more. They also had a Magazine Release party at the Surf Indian on Saturday night. It was standing room only, but everyone had a great time. Thanks Slide!

Andre and Eric from My Local Line Up TV were all over the place documenting everything. I cannot wait to see what they do with the footage!

It looks like more episodes from your favorite Surfing TV show will be coming your way soon.

The newest member to My Local Line Up, Kaley Swift, was at the booth meeting and greeting everyone...GREAT SMILE KALEY!! if you are looking for any TV advertising, she is the one to talk too.

Dont forget to check out the new episodes on Ch 16...visit mylocallineup.com for more info!

There was a great display on the evolution of surf boards. One in particular caught my attention, it was a Hollowed Board.

You can acutally see the screws and glue that was used to hold it together...we have come a long way in surf technology. But its still amazing to see the history! Speaking of history, take a look at one of the first ever camera housings...
The show had a little bit of something for everyone. There is so much to talk about!! Be on the look for more pics, stories, and great companies that attended the Sacred Craft show...and the Dick Brewer 'Shape- off'.

Gordon & Smith 50th Anniversary Party

The Gordon & Smith 50th anniversary party at the Wavehouse on Saturday was a ton of fun. I got to ride the wave with my brother Micah...see the pics. Its not like a regular wave, but the experts they had were putting on an awesome show!

The night was a great tribute to Larry and Floyd along with all the instrumental people that made G&S what it is today. I saw people that I had not seen in such a long time. It was good to catch up with everyone!

There was also an awesome display of old boards. Including one with Jimmie Hendrix!
Thanks to Bird, Joe and everyone else for displaying your personal G&S collections...it was a great event. Thanks G&S!!!
